What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage can improve your quality of life in several ways. If chronic conditions like back pain or sciatica are making it difficult to go about your daily activities, deep tissue massage therapy may be able to help relieve stiffness, aches, and pains.
This massage technique consists of slow strokes that target the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. The massage therapist applies sustained pressure to target areas of tension and scar tissue, helping to relieve tense muscles and allow for healing.
There are various types of techniques involved with deep tissue massage, such as:
- Active release technique
- Muscle energy technique
- Cross fiber frictioning, also known as cross fibered friction massage
- Trigger point therapy
Our trained and experienced massage therapists will choose specific techniques based on your preference and levels of pain and discomfort.

What is the Process Like?
The process of deep tissue massage begins with the massage therapist asking where you have soreness or injury. You can discuss how deep of pressure you would like and where you would like your massage therapist to focus their efforts.
You will then lie on the massage table, either on your back or stomach, under a sheet. Throughout the massage the therapist will use deep, slow strokes and finger pressure to help relieve tension in your muscles and connective tissue. Your massage will last for 60 minutes or 90 minutes depending on what you choose.
Deep tissue massage is too much pressure for some people, and it is likely to cause some soreness afterwards. During the massage, if you are feeling pain or the pressure is too deep, just let your massage therapist know and they will adjust accordingly.
What are the Benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage?
This technique is geared toward relieving musculoskeletal issues like sports injuries and strains. It works by breaking up scar tissue, reducing muscle tension, increasing blood flow, and reducing inflammation.
Deep tissue massage also provides psychological benefits. While its main focus is to help treat muscle pain and stiffness, it also can help you feel more relaxed.
People have reported multiple benefits including help with sports injuries, plantar fasciitis, sciatica, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, and high blood pressure.
Several studies have supplemented this anecdotal evidence, including a 2017 study that found that deep tissue massage was effective in reducing pain for people with chronic lower back pain. It also lessened the need for anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen.

What’s the Difference Between Deep Tissue Massage vs Swedish Massage?
While these two massage styles may be comparable, the biggest difference between Swedish vs deep tissue massage is the approach and technique.
Swedish massage involves light pressure and long strokes. It’s ideal for someone looking to get relaxation out of their massage.
A deep tissue massage involves more deep, firm pressure forceful movement. It’s designed to provide relief from pain and tension by working deep into the muscles.
