What is myofascial release?
Surrounding your musculoskeletal structures are protective bands and bundles of fibers called fascia. The fascia is normally very flexible, but when you are stressed, injured, or doing repetitive motions, you can get tightness and tension in your fascia.
Your therapist will gently work on the muscle knots, also known as trigger points, that form where your fascia has gotten tight and stiff. They will use kneading motions to help release the tension and restore your full range of motion.
Similar to trigger point therapy, but it is not the same thing. With trigger point therapy, your massage therapist will apply deep and direct pressure to muscle knots. With myofascial release, your therapist will focus on slower, gentler stretching and dynamic movement. Instead of targeting specific knots, they will work a larger area of tissue. Both are excellent massage techniques that can work together to help relieve your pain.

How can myofascial release benefit me?
Pain relief, improved flexibility, and improved circulation are some of the main benefits. Conditions that cause chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and multiple sclerosis, may be improved with manual release therapy. You might notice a positive difference in your mobility and flexibility and you may also notice benefits from improved circulation, such as improved energy, better digestion, fewer headaches, and less numbness or tingling. You might even benefit from the breaking down of scar tissue in your fascia and the surrounding structures.
Stress relief is another helpful benefit of this gentle massage therapy technique, and you may find that you leave your appointment in a better, calmer mood. This type of therapy works wonderfully when you receive it regularly.
What is the process like?
Much like other types of massage therapy, will start with a brief consultation with your therapist where you talk about your areas of pain. Then, you will lie on the massage table under a sheet while your massage therapist uses gentle pressure and sweeping motions to release tension in your muscle bands.
